Active Ingredient: Ivabradine Hydrochloride
Procoralon is used to treat stable angina pectoris which causes chest pain.
Procoralan is used to treat the symptoms of long-term stable angina (e.g., jaw and back, pains to the chest) in adults with coronary artery disease (disease of the heart caused by the obstruction of the blood vessels that supply blood to the heart muscle) who have a normal heart rhythm. Procoralan mainly works by reducing the heart rate by a few beats per minute. This lowers the heart's need for oxygen especially in the situations when an angina attack is more likely to happen. Ivabradine hydrochloride is used in patients who cannot be treated with beta blockers (another type of medicine to treat angina) or in combination with beta?blockers in patients whose disease is not controlled with them alone and whose heart rate is at least 70 beats per minute. It is also used in patients with long-term heart failure (when the heart cannot pump enough blood to the rest of the body) who have a normal heart rhythm but whose heart rate is at least 75 beats per minute.
The recommended starting dose is 5 mg twice a day. Take it orally with meals. In patients over 75 years old, a lower starting dose of 2.5 mg twice a day can be used, please note that tablets can be divided into two halves. For angina, the starting dose should never exceed 5 mg twice daily in patients under 75 years of age. Treatment must be stopped if the heart rate decreases persistently below 50 beats per minute or if symptoms of bradycardia (slow heart rate) continue. When used for angina, treatment should be stopped if there is no improvement in symptoms after 3 months.
Before taking ivabradine, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it. This drug may make you dizzy or cause vision changes. Do not drive, use machinery, or do any activity that requires alertness or clear vision until you are sure you can perform such activities safely. Limit your consumption of grapefruit juice during treatment with Procoralan.
Procoralan must not be used in patients who have a resting heart rate below 70 beats per minute, very low blood pressure, various types of heart disorder such as heart attack, rhythm disorders, cardiogenic shock, unstable or acute (sudden) heart failure and unstable angina) or severe liver problems. It must not be used in women who are pregnant, breast-feeding or by women who could become pregnant and who are not using appropriate contraceptives.
Possible side effect
The most common side effect is luminous phenomena or "phosphenes" (a temporary brightness in the field of vision). Get emergency medical help if you have palpitations and cardiac extra beats, feeling sick (nausea), constipation, diarrhoea, spinning sensation (vertigo), difficulty breathing (dyspnoea), muscle cramps and changes in laboratory parameters: high blood levels of uric acid, an excess of eosinophils (a type of white blood cell) and elevated creatinine in blood (a breakdown product of muscle).
Procoralan interacts with the following medicines: Amiodarone, beta-blockers, digoxin, diltiazem, azole antifungals (e.g., itraconazole), macrolide antibiotics (e.g., clarithromycin, telithromycin), nefazodone, or protease inhibitors (eg, nelfinavir),barbiturates (e.g., phenobarbital), phenytoin, rifampin, or St. John's wort because they may decrease ivabradine's effectiveness.
Take the missed dose as soon as possible. If it is almost time of the next intake just skip it and go back to your schedule.
If you think you have overdosed the medicine seek emergency medical help at once.
Store ivabradine between 68 and 77 degrees F (20 and 25 degrees C). Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep out of the reach and sight of children.
